Charlotte’s Castle

Residents of a landmark Toronto apartment building known as ‘Spadina Gardens’ battle to stop its redevelopment by a new owner. One tenant, Charlotte Mickie, rallies a quirky group of current and former tenants including artists, playwrights, socialites, and models to defend the building. A charming character study that also sheds light on the role of “renoviction” (renovation eviction) in Toronto’s housing crisis.

“tenants in Toronto’s Annex neighbourhood fighting in 2020 to defend their nearly 120-year-old boutique rental building from a Dutch-based property developer with plans to renovate away the heritage charm…” Shane Dingman, Globe and Mail
