Save the dates for 2025!

DocFest announces our dates for 2025! Wishing everyone a happy National Canadian Film Day on April 17.

If you’re like us then you love Canadian documentaries and you’re already missing DocFest 2024. Don’t worry festival planning for our 14th annual event is already underway, and we’re just about 10 months away. You can mark your calendars for February 21 to 23, 2025.

While we all wait for DocFest 2025, we can join together in celebrating Canadian Films and Filmmakers for National Canadian Film Day. That’s right, this amazing day is back again this April 17th and it’s bringing more than 1,000 screenings, in every province and territory, and in more than 39 countries around the world! You can learn more about this movement from REEL Canada on their website

Each year we like to highlight a FREE documentary for you to enjoy, and our recommendation this year is Star Wars Kid: The Rise of the Digital Shadows. This NFB film was part of our 2023 festival line up and we loved it so much that we screened it again as our Student Screening Event in 2024. The film was chosen for its important and timely messages, including pop culture ethics, online bullying, and internet and social media literacy.

The Friends of the Library sponsored our Student Screening this past February at the Empire Theatre. Over 400 local students in grades 7 & 8 got a chance to see this film and participate in a live Q&A with the filmmaker, Mathieu Fournier.

Special Announcements
We are so fortunate to have a board of incredibly talented and dedicated volunteers. Our board members not only guide the management of the festival, they also actively participate in all aspects of our operations, from film selections to sponsorships, to running the venues. We are so thrilled to be welcoming two new members to this incredible team.

Introducing new DocFest board member, and local filmmaker, Roz Mugford!

With over 20 years of expertise in digital film, documentary, and video production, Roz Mugford leads Double Barrel as its CEO and Creative Director. Since 2012, she has been instrumental in crafting and producing a wide range of content, including engaging brand narratives and impactful documentaries for Canada’s largest organizations and broadcasters.

Roz’s versatility shines through her work both in front of and behind the camera. Her career, which began in 2002, encompasses writing, producing, directing, and hosting diverse content across various platforms, from print magazines to radio, television, and online media.

This past festival Roz’s film Hidden Heroes won the Best Local Short award!

DocFest is run on amazing volunteer power, we couldn’t do all that we do without the dedicated crew that supports us over the weekend and the incredible behind the scenes work of our volunteer board members who plan the whole event.

Introducing our second new DocFest board member Audra Kent!

An employee of Belleville Public Library, Audra is a graduate of the Photojournalism program at Loyalist College. She is a curious individual with a lifelong love of learning & a genuine interest in what goes on in the world. Audra is very grateful for the opportunity to become a member of the Belleville Downtown DocFest Team.

Both Roz and Audra will be brining their wealth of expertise and experience to our 2025 festival planning. We already have our dates set for February 21-23, 2025 and we can’t wait to share more details with you soon.
