You Are Not A Soldier

The film explores the filmmaker’s journey to understand some of her complex family history with war as she documents the life and work of award-winning war photographer André Liohn through a vivid combination of film, personal footage and extraordinary reporatge.

We meet and discover the self-examination of this decorated, award winning (Robert Capa Gold Medal winner) war photographer’s life at work in war zones, at home with family, and at the point after the deaths of his colleagues Marie Colvin, Tim Hetherington and Chris Hondros. The film puts us alongside André as he questions his motives and as he examines the fine line between life and death, the focus of what he has witnessed and the truth he is compelled to reveal.

“…she (Dir. Telles) brings home her point about the impact of war on the families left behind. War is also hell for those not on the frontlines.”  Anna Marie de la Fuente, Variety

“You Are Not A Soldier is an ode to survival and love. It is my anti-war sigh,” said director Maria Carolina Telles. “The film is also a way of talking about overcoming grief.” Aleksei Abib, co-director and screenwriter, added: “This is a story of a father and daughter’s relationship. A resurrecting secret in the desert of life.” Andreas Wiseman, Deadline.com
