Stand Up with Women!

Four films that focus on women and standing together for a better world!

At DocFest, we believe that It’s important to show the truth – and the truth is, we still don’t have gender equity in our society or around the globe. That’s why it’s important to share these stories about women, from all walks of life, forming communities, standing up and fighting for what’s right. They don’t just fight for themselves, they fight for everyone – and we stand with them.

Ain’t No Time for Women

On the eve of the 2019 presidential election in Tunis a group of women, including the filmmaker’s grandmother, gather at a hairdressers. The women discuss their political points of view, their concerns and hopes for the new democratic regime openly in this female haven. This short Canadian film gives us an intimate window into their thoughts on what the outcome of the election is likely to have on their own lives.

Dying to Divorce

Filmed over five years, this feature takes us into the heart of Turkey’s gender-based violence crisis in an environment of eroding democratic freedoms. Through intimately shot personal stories, the film gives a unique perspective on the struggle to be an independent woman in modern Turkey.

End of the Line: The Women of Standing Rock

We are taken inside the roots of the resistance movement to protest the Dakota Access oil pipeline, as the pipeline is pushed through and edging towards lands and waters of the Sioux indigenous people of South Dakota. We meet and learn the stories of four indigenous women who, alongside the banks of the Missouri River, are encamped and under threat from increasingly militarized private and police forces turned against them.

One never kills for love

Painting their simple message of resistance “feminicides must stop!”  – as large format graffiti in Montreal – a group of women, sisters, friends, meeting under cover of night, form a feminist collective action group to raise awareness and to help to end the violence endured by women as part of normalized culture and society.
